AI Referral Tracking
People are increasingly discovering products and services through AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Convultra tracks these visitors automatically, showing you which AI platforms drive traffic, conversions, and revenue to your site.
Why AI referral tracking matters
When someone asks ChatGPT "what is the best project management tool?" and it recommends your product, that visitor might click through to your site and eventually convert. Without AI referral tracking, this traffic gets lumped into "direct" or "other" in your analytics — invisible and unattributed.
Convultra identifies these visitors and attributes them to the specific AI platform that sent them. This gives you a clear picture of how AI-driven discovery is impacting your business.
Example insight: "ChatGPT drove 340 visitors and $12,000 in revenue this month — a 45% increase from last month."

What you will see
AI Referral Analytics
Navigate to Traffic Analytics in your dashboard. The AI Referral Analytics section shows:
- Visitors by AI platform — How many visitors each AI platform sent to your site
- Conversions from AI referrals — How many of those visitors converted
- Revenue attribution — The revenue generated from AI-referred visitors
- Trends over time — Whether AI referral traffic is growing or declining
Per-platform breakdown
See detailed metrics for each AI platform individually. This helps you understand which platforms mention your brand most frequently and which ones drive the highest-value traffic.
For example, you might find that Perplexity sends fewer visitors than ChatGPT, but those visitors convert at a higher rate — useful information for your content and SEO strategy.
How detection works
Convultra uses two methods to identify AI referral traffic:
-
Referrer headers — When a visitor clicks a link in an AI platform's response, the browser sends a referrer header indicating where they came from. Convultra matches these referrer domains against its list of known AI platforms.
-
UTM parameters — Some AI platforms (notably ChatGPT and Perplexity) add UTM parameters to outbound links. Convultra recognizes these AI-specific UTM patterns and attributes the visit accordingly.
Both methods work automatically with no configuration needed on your part.
Using AI referral data
Here are some practical ways to use AI referral insights:
- Content strategy — If AI platforms are recommending your competitors more often, it may be time to invest in content that AI models reference (detailed guides, comparison pages, authoritative resources)
- Brand monitoring — Track whether AI platforms are mentioning your brand more or less over time
- Revenue reporting — Include AI referral revenue in your marketing reports to show the full picture of how customers find you
- Channel comparison — Compare AI referral performance against paid search, organic, and social to understand the emerging landscape
AI referrals are a growing channel. As more people use AI assistants for product research and recommendations, this traffic source will only become more important. Having tracking in place now means you will have historical data to measure the trend.
